VIDEO GAME PROPOSAL

I would like to design a video game that is all about gathering a strong team to accomplish something. The game will be mostly about finding people for in your team and with your team you can come further in the game. At some points in the game you will have to choose between two or three people and they will all have a different racial background. Choosing your teammate is only based on the looks, since you just met the people. The question that is constantly coming back in this video game is: 'Will you be biased by choosing your own race of will you choose for diversity?'. The diversity of the team will make you earn more points in the game and the video game should steer the player in that position. This way of playing the game will relate to the argument that I'm trying to make by designing this video game.

The argument in this video game that I'm trying to make is about racism. I notice that compared to my home country (The Netherlands) the people here in America are more divided and they don't see the value of the different cultures. I see that racism is a big problem in the world in general and I argue that a group of different races are stronger than a group with all the same races. The different cultures all have their own values that can contribute to a group and in real life we all should work together and not be as biased to our own race as we are now.

The audience for my Twine project is actually everyone. Racism is a global problem and it affects more people than we can think of. I would like to send the message to everyone; that you shouldn't discriminate someone on its color, because they can have more value to your life than you think. Since it is a video game that I will design, I think the focus of my audience will be students. Students are the future and therefore it would be extremely valuable to show them my message.

I expect some issues by designing my video game. The argument is in my opinion clear, but explaining it through a video game is new for me and I expect that it will be hard to do this right in the first try. I plan on tackling this problem by keeping the argument a secret and let my friends play the game and ask them about the video game. I can learn from them to ask them what they felt was the argument and from here I can work further on the video game with their insights. Another problem where I'm afraid for, is that the way how the game should be played is too hard and the player will not understand it. I don't have a good plan to tackle this problem, but I think that trail and error will help me by finding a good way of rewarding the player by making the right choices.
