I'm from The Netherlands and I'm in America for an exchange program. At my home university I study Economics. I chose the course Writing Across Media to come out of my comfort zone, try something new, be creative, and learn to communicate with the world.
This is my first time in the United States of America and I didn't know what to expect here. I had seen some TV shows and films from America, but my head was 'empty' and open for every type of culture. When I arrived here, it imediately started to feel like home. There are nice people that help me out and the environment feels safe.
So my first day began early for the international orientation day. I was about to meet Elmi at ISR to eat some breakfast with. We went inside and there was a huge hall with all kinds of food. In The Netherlands we normally eat bread in the morning, but the bread seemed to be different. I took the oatmeal with some yogurt for a healthy breakfast. When I took the first bite, the first typical American thing happend, the food was all sweetend with sugar!
The first meeting for the orientation was in an enormous building, also typical American I guess. Something typical Dutch was the rain... I went (soaked) to go sit in a chair to listen to the first speech. After the speech I went to Walmart with the orientation leaders. This was the biggest store I have ever seen! Besides the fact this store was so big, there was also a lot of choices for every product.
As a closure of the first orientation day, we had an Ice Cream Social. This meant FREE ice cream, typical American as well. After the Ice Cream Social we watched the movie Central Intellegence. After the movie I went home and my first real day in America was over.
